Sentai Filmworks Licenses New Sports Anime!

North American anime publisher Sentai Filmworks announced on Tuesday March 25th that they had licensed the anime adaptation of the  Haikyuu!! volleyball manga by Haruichi Furudate. The sports anime is set to premiere this April 6th and a home video release is to follow.

The original plot follows junior high student, Shōyō Hinata, as he gains a new found love of volleyball after watching a national championship match on TV. Although short in height, he becomes determined to follow in the footsteps of the championship's star player, nicknamed the "Small Giant", after seeing his plays. He creates a volleyball club and begins practicing by himself. Eventually five other members join the team by his last year of middle school, but they are defeated in their first tournament after being challenged by the championship favorite team, which includes the so-called "King of the Court" Tobio Kageyama, in the first round. Though Hinata's team suffers a miserable defeat, he vows to eventually surpass Kageyama and defeat him.

So, when Shōyō gets to high school he joins Kurasuno High School's volleyball team, vowing revenge against Kageyama. However, Kageyama is also on Kurasuno's team. The former rivals form a legendary combo with Hinata's mobility and Kageyama's precision ball-handling. Together, they take on the local tournaments and vow to meet Kurasuno's fated rival school in the nationals.

The series will be directed by Susumu Mitsunaka who will be directing from scripts written by Taku Kishimoto. Takahiro Kishida will work on character design while Production I.G (Kuroko no Basuke) will handle the series animation.

Now, since Production I.G is said to be the animator of this series many will hope that it meet the same quality standard that Kuroko no Basuke set. Also, many fans might want to compare the two sports series seeing as how they are two sports themed anime being animated by the same production company. Lets hope that this new series will bring with it the success that came to Kuroko no Basuke which currently has two seasons.
